A newborn portrait session can be a wonderful way to take a step out of the new baby whirlwind and create a super special memory that will last forever. Capture those velvet cheeks, almond eyes and tiny toes, so that when they’re too big to be rocked to sleep another night you have something really special to remember those early days by.

Let’s be clear on one simple fact: there is nothing on this earth more beautiful than your baby. Nothing inspires me like new life and so my style is entirely about focusing on the beauty of these brand new, tiny humans. So when I style a newborn portrait session it’s very minimal, because what could possibly be worth the distraction in a portrait of these precious wee ones? I like to use lots of white and organic textures. I utilise natural light for a warmer, softer glow over their delicate newborn skin. I also use gentle posing techniques to capture every individual baby as they like to be. Basically, it’s all about baby.
Planning
When do Newborn portrait sessions happen?
Newborn photography sessions happen in the first two months of life, though most recommended within the first two weeks. Essentially you want your brand new bundle to be as sleepy and curled up as possible as it is the easiest time to get those peaceful, snoozy shots. You should contact me as early as possible in pregnancy to book and start planning your newborn portrait session.
HOW
the sessions work…
I am a professionally trained and insured Essex based newborn photographer, with years of experience and three children of my own. So whilst having a brand new baby can be a chaotic time, you can put your trust in me as a professional specialist newborn photographer.
All newborn portrait sessions take place in your own home. I love the authentic backdrop of being in baby’s natural habitat: their own loving home. After years of experience I found I didn’t have to make parents choose “studio or lifestyle?” Because I can create the clean simplistic studio-esc newborn portraits and the authentic lifestyle images in one session, in your home. I’ll bring everything I need, all you need to provide is a cleared bed space and window and we can make magic!
Sessions usually take 1.5-3 hours to allow plenty of time for feeding and settling. It’s important to know that with me there’s no rush I love a birth story and new parents need time to chill and caffeinate. We’ll go at baby’s pace because it’s important you enjoy the experience of the session as well as the final images. These early baby days are precious and a portrait session should only be something that adds to the specialness of this time.
TRUST ME
I know what it’s like with a new baby…
As a mum of 3 young children I know all too well that leaving the house with a new baby can seem daunting so isn’t it great you won’t have to for this? Oh but having a photographer come to your house? Won’t it have to immaculately clean and tidy with show home interiors?! Absolutely not. Please do not pick up a thing in preparation for your session. We will move what we need to during session. I will be nothing short of horrified if I discover a new parent has been rushing around to tidy for me! It’s just not necessary. I only need a cleared bed space, a window, maybe a doorway or a white wall and we’ll create beautiful images.
PREPARATION
So what do you need to do?
The only thing I ask you to do in preparation is turn the heating up and if possible start feeding 20 minutes before I arrive. Rest assured I’ve got it all in hand to make sure that your newborn portrait session is a really calm and special affair. Because every baby is special and capturing their arrival deserves not just beautiful images but a wonderful time welcoming them to the world whilst we take them.

Had a photo shoot with my daughter Martha and she was only 10 days old so I was nervous how she would be and how Charlie would get on with us. Booking was simple and straightforward, with Charlie answering all our questions quickly.
On the day itself, we (being new, seriously sleep-deprived parents!) arrived at Charlie’s a little late but were greeted so warmly and made to feel completely comfortable and relaxed (even when Lyra pooed and peed her way through several blankets!). Being a parent herself, Charlie knows all the things that are tough in those early days and solved it all with a comfortable place to feed, plus tea and biscuits!
The photos themselves are simply gorgeous. I know we’re biased but she captured our little girl so beautifully. Plus Charlie humoured my request for a particular shot I wanted. The prints and canvas we ordered are of the highest quality and the disc and USB stick have been very useful for printing additional shots for family and friends.
